Career Fair Tips
School of Mines Career Fairs are held each fall and spring. These events bring a wide range of employers from many states to recruit students for full-time, internship, and co-op positions.
These career fairs offer all Mines students-from freshman to graduate level-excellent opportunities to gain first-hand knowledge from employers about full-time job openings, as well as intern/co-op opportunities. These events are free to all Mines students, alumni, faculty, and staff
To Get Results at the Career Fair:
Before the Fair - PREPARE
- Check the employers attending: http://sdmines.sdsmt.edu/sdsmtcareerfair.
- Research the employers that interest you.
- Update and PROOF your resume
- Develop a 30-second introduction of yourself and practice saying it!
- Think of 1-2 questions to ask employers
During the Fair - COMMUNICATE
- Organize a plan of which employers you want to talk to.
- Dress appropriately and bring numerous copies of your resume
- Make a good first impression - smile, make eye contact, use a firm handshake, and introduce yourself in a friendly manner.
- Remember your body language! Don't chew gum, fidget, or look around while the employer is talking to you
- Ask questions and be positive
After the Fair - FOLLOW UP
- Send follow-up letters or emails to the employers that interest you
- Reinforce your interest and reiterate why you are a "good fit".
- Submit any applications or resumes online that recuiters recommended you do
